1.  What does worship mean to me?

The meaning of worship over the years has changed for me dramatically. And during different seasons it varies as well. Right now, in this season of my life, worship for me is turning back to God my praise no matter how tough life is, no matter how unfair things seem to be, no matter how rotten things get, I just keep praising and thanking Him for His unfailing ways.   When I do that, in thought or in deed – through loving others or through a song, or through celebrating as a community the Eucharist – well, then I’ve worshiped; and a transformation of my spirit takes place in this exchange.

Recently Nicole Wick, a Twitter friend, asked to interview me about our motel outreach.

Jesus Loves the Forgotten

In: Service| love your neighbor

24 Aug 2009

motel banner There’s a chapter in Craig Gross and Jason Harper’s book, Jesus Loves You…This I Know titled Jesus Loves the Forgotten. In this chapter Craig writes, “Jesus was intentional about making a beeline to get his arms around the forgotten… Jesus loves the forgotten and the marginalized. He is committed to loving them through the disastrous, deadly, self-worth eliminating effects of being overlooked”. Who is more overlooked or forgotten than the homeless? When I heard about Bridget Willard’s Pardoned Prodigals motel outreach I had to share it during Love Your Neighbor week. Record numbers of families are living in motel rooms in the United States. It’s not uncommon to drive by seedy motels here in the Detroit area and see children playing in the gravel parking lots. Jesus loves them and so should we. I’m proud to share how Bridget is showing love to these forgotten, marginalized neighbors.

NW: What exactly is Pardoned Prodigals Outreach?

BW: We are a group of people who have a heart to reach the downtrodden, discouraged, dejected people of Orange County.  We spun off of More of Jesus Ministries which started in 2001 on the corner of Beach and Ball in Anaheim, CA in a parking lot. On Friday nights we go to a motel, serve warm food, distribute donated clothes and bread, and have a church service (sermon, worship, prayer).

NW: What does a typical Friday night look like? What all do you do?

BW: There are three families that take turns each week preparing the meals that are served. Clothes are also brought and given away as they are donated. After our social time we have a worship team of four (2 guitars, 2 vocals, and cajon) lead worship then we have a memory verse, sermon, and prayer. A typical night goes like this: 6:45-7:15 dinner; 7:15 – 7:45 worship; Memory Verse. Then the children go into their own room (my husband and I teach them) for a children’s program. The adults have a sermon and prayer (laying on of hands) until about 9:00PM.

Active Image

Name:  Jared Anderson
Location: Colorado Springs, CO

Age:  28

Jared Anderson is a worship leader and songwriter based at New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado. As well as being apart of the Desperation Band, he is a recording artist with Integrity Music and has written worship songs such as “Rescue”, “Amazed”, and “Hear us from Heaven”.  Jared and his wife Megan live in Colorado Springs with their 3 children Everett, Beckett, and Francie.

1. What does worship mean to you?

Worship to me is the practice of pleasing God. We are made aware through the stories and writings of Scripture what the nature of God is, what He likes and dislikes, and how he responds to people who call on Him. This practice is done through study and devotion. It is a posture of the heart that leads to outer demonstrations that produce truth and beauty.

5Questions with Bridget Willard – Sep 2007 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Conrad Abraham
Tuesday, 11 September 2007
Bridget WillardThis month we found Bridget Willard who happens to be a 34 year old worship leader and lives in Dana Point, California. You can read a little about her and her thoughts on our 5Questions.Mentored as a worship leader by Chris Falson , Bridget’s passion is intimate, powerful corporate worship as well as worship evangelism.
She believes that worship brings holistic healing body, soul, and spirit.Bridget is the worship leader at Calvary Chapel Seaside in Laguna Beach . Since 1996 Bridget has taught children, teens, and women and has lead worship for those groups as well as prayer meetings, outreaches, home groups, retreats, and coffee houses.

Married for 14 years to her husband Mercier, a pastor, their marriage and ministry have been synomus. Their passion is the motel outreach in Anaheim, California, called Pardoned Prodigals that has been reaching out to the downtrodden, discouraged, depressed, dejected, and the lost since 2001.

Her debut CD “Come Away“, produced by Australian singer/songwriter and worship leader, Chris Falson, has something for everyone. The sounds for each song are entirely different.

As well as a worship leader and teacher, Bridget is also an author; her first book Bagel by the Sea is currently available. Bridget is currently writing a devotional journey for worship leaders entitled ON THE MOUNTAIN, hopefully available soon.

1. What does worship mean to you?
Worship is what we were created to do. Worship is the outward expression of an inward devotion. We worship something. We worship money or cars or careers or success or ourselves. We make a choice on what we worship. I choose to worship God. When my light is dim, and circumstances around me are unbearable, I choose to believe in Jesus and I choose to believe in His Goodness and I choose to worship. Worship is an act of the volition.

2. What do you think is the result of worship?
God doesn’t change because of our worship to him or lack thereof; He is never failing, never changing. WE change. Our perspective changes. Our outlook changes. In Colossians 3:1 Paul tells us to set our eyes on things above, not earthly things. When we set our eyes upon Him, toward the goal, toward Heaven, all of the lies of the world, the flesh, and the devil fade into oblivion. In worship we are healed. We are healed physically, we are healed emotionally, we are healed spiritually, and we are healed mentally.

3. What causes you to worship?
An answer to prayer, a great time in the Word, a moment of enlightenment, hearing a testimony, giving a testimony, desperation, anxiety, grief, fear: in all of these circumstances, I am inspired to worship–I choose to worship.

4. How can worship be displayed in your life?

Acts 17:28 says that in HIM we live and move and have our being. Worship is a lifestyle. All aspects of my life (outwardly) should reveal my inward devotion and outward worship. Also, in worship we are given HOPE, PEACE, and JOY. These attributes of God that infuse our very beings change our outward behavior. We are being transformed from glory to glory.

5. How has worship impacted you?
Truthfully, I am totally desperate for God. Maybe it’s my bent? Either way, all of my life circumstances I have had a choice: drown in my sorrow, forget God or worship Him for who HE is and what He has ALREADY done. Through the loss of our business, our miscarriage, several ministry breakups… I have been healed entirely through worship. Something special happens when as a body we come together to worship our Savior. People have been healed physically and that builds up our faith. Worship comes from reading the word and knowing the One in the word–and yet, the more you worship, the more you want to read. Worship has caused me to dive into the Bible–especially the Psalms and seek Him. “When You said, “Seek My face,” My heart said to You, “Your face, Lord, I will seek.” Psalm 27:8
