Part of Fred McKinnon’s #SundaySetlists.

Our Friday night motel outreach functions just as any other church.  We may differ in this:  the children and adults are together for a psalm reading, worship, and the memory verse.

Fridays, we generally have me on guitar and vocals, Nicole on vocals, Warren on lead guitar (acoustic), and Camille on cajon (or d’jembe).  Each week is different.  This week it was just me and Camille.

Fridays, we generally have me on guitar and vocals, Nicole on vocals, Warren on lead guitar (acoustic), and Camille on cajon (or d’jembe).  Each week is different.

This week it was me and Camille.  For some reason I have a mental block on 6/8 (or 3/4 for that matter) time signatures.  Between the first and second songs, this came back to haunt me, live!  It took me until the first chorus of “Oh My Redeemer” before I was actually in 6/8; poor Camille, trying to figure out what in the world I was doing.

Here is the set:

Here Is Love (D)
Reese, Williams / Robert Lowry

This is the song that kicked off my “Hymn-Theology” posts.

I don’t remember when I first heard this song, but I really like it.  I’ve been using it often on Fridays.  People pick it up fast.  It’s easy to sing and has great lyrics.

Father, I Adore You (D)
Terrye Coelho  © 1972 Maranatha Music CCLI# 26557

Driving in the car today, I heard a really new version of this song on the radio (KFSH 95.9).  This is one of the first songs I loved when I started going to Calvary Chapel back in 1995.  Even at that time, the song was old, but new to me.

Your Love Oh Lord (A)
Powell, Mac et al © 1999 New Spring  CCLI#1894255

This is a great standard.  I love it.  It’s from Psalm 36:5-6; you can’t go wrong with Bible verses as your lyrics.

Revelation Song (A)
(c) 2004 Jennie Lee Riddle/Gateway CCLI #4447960

Like I said in my post from October 2:

I’ve wanted to do this song since I heard it on SongDiscovery #50, but ended up forgetting about it until I heard the worship team at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa do it a few weeks ago.  I hear it’s also covered by Kari Jobe.

It was well-received song.  This will be it’s second rotation.

Tonight will be a bit different.  A bunch of our teaching team is absent so Mercier will be teaching a combined meeting with the kids and adults.

So we’re mixing it up with kids songs, the memory verse, more kid songs, sermon, and more closing worship.

Mercier will be teaching on why bad things happen.

10/3/09:

It was just me and Nicole.

I managed to mess up chords on nearly every song and ended up entirely skipping  the first because I couldn’t seem to manage to “land” on the C#m7 correctly.  :/  Plus, the testimonies went long, so we needed to cut a song.

By the time we got to “Revelation Song,” however, everyone seemed to settle in, focus on God, and worship in spirit and truth.

It was a powerful evening.

Friday it was just me and I was sorry I chose “Holy.”  Man, when songs only have one chord for a long time, you’d better get the rhythm down or have an awesome band to back you up.  This is what I call “arrangement-dependent” songs.  It was musically HORRIBLE.  Afterward, however, the pastor was very pleased and the congregation managed to worship while I destroyed this song.

The second song didn’t go much better–it had been way too long since I’ve played guitar and my fingers were sore.  Beside the physical logistics, the worship time was powerful.

9/21/09 Thoughts:

We had the whole band together this week which was wonderful.  I was pretty crazy to choose Holy, because it’s rhythmically challenging, but it worked out.

Warren taught me a “cheater” F chord (similar to my D2) that helped me / allowed me to play “Be Unto Your Name,” a song we’ve done in the past when I lead worship on keys.  The church exploded with praise on that song.

We started nearly 15 minutes late so I skipped “I Will Go” and “Give Me Jesus.”  I hope to recycle this set next week (we have about 10 minutes of an extremely distracted rehearsal, if you can even call it that.

Here is the set in G.

I’ve included an extra song in case I can’t pull off the F in “Be Unto Your Name.”  For some reason I have great difficulty with the F chord.

Oh My Redeemer

I took the time, for several reasons including misbehavior and the lyric content, to give a small exhortation on this song.  I discussed the phrase “you are worthy to be praised” by asking the children what the word “worth” means?  I then gave some practical examples ($5 for a cup of coffee–is it worth that?) to explain that worth is something we decide upon.  If you love the Lord, then it becomes worth it to you to spend 20 minutes worshiping Him, only thinking of him (not your friends), even though it’s 90 + degrees with 60% humidity and a few fans.

I also told them the story of Palm Sunday because of the lyric “if I don’t praise your name, even the rocks will cry out.”

I think it was an effective exhortation and the entire room (children and adults) quieted down and you could sense the distractions flee and the spirit’s soothing peace.  It was really special.

August 29, 2009 · 2 Comments

Part of Fred McKinnon’s #SundaySetlists.

Fridays, we generally have me on guitar and vocals, Nicole on vocals, Warren on lead guitar (acoustic), and Camille on cajon (or d’jembe).

This is the set (all in the Key of D):

  • Hallelujah (Your Love is Amazing)
  • I will praise You, Oh my redeemer
  • Your Holiness Surrounds Me
  • Come Let Us Worship and Bow Down
    Psalm 95:6-7
  • More Precious Than Silver

COMMENTS:

Tonight was especially neat. I enjoyed, as always, participating in music with a team that has a like-mind.  They all see Jesus as paramount.

During “Your Holiness Surrounds Me” I gave an exhortation (mostly to the kids) about calling on the name of Jesus when you are afraid (darkness) because He is the light.  It was neat to see the faces change from fear to peace within about 40 seconds.  That’s a testimony of God’s grace.

Side note:  I need to play guitar (ie practice) more than once a week.  My fingers were killing me.
